I’ve been shooting the Solwota series for near on three years, managing to visit twice a year in that time. It’s a collection of portraits of the Ni-Van and their relationship with the water as both playground and bread basket.

The water horizon is a constant element in the composition, everything else is dependent on the situation, subject and weather.

An interesting note is that the project lifespan has coincided with the adoption of the smartphone and an awareness of the outside world through social media. This I’ve noted has had an influence on the way people react to being photographed. There is more of a tendency for subjects to imitate poses clearly influenced by our pop-culture as opposed to a comfortable soulfulness in older or more remote inhabitants.
